In this experience, you will experience the life of Okuyama with a local guide in the townscape of Shiramine Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings and the natural beauty of the mountains. Sometimes you will interact with local residents and talk over tea. Shiramine is located at the foot of Mt. Hakusan, one of the three most famous mountains in Japan. It is a heavy snow area that sometimes exceeds 4m, and has created a unique lifestyle of living with snow. The biggest feature of the townscape of Shiramine Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings (Judenken) is that although it is a mountain village, the buildings are densely packed together, forming a town-like landscape. This area is surrounded by mountains and was not suitable for rice cultivation. For this reason, advanced sericulture was practiced from the mid-Edo period, and the income from this allowed the villagers to purchase daily necessities and marine products. This lifestyle and culture is reflected in the townscape and architecture, allowing one to imagine what life was like for villagers in the past.
