Service Description

[Time required] Approximately 1 hour [About the experience] Shiramine is located at the foot of Mt. Hakusan, one of the three most famous mountains in Japan. It is an area where heavy snowfall sometimes exceeds 4m, and has created a unique lifestyle of living with the snow. The greatest feature of the townscape of the Shiramine Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings (Judenken) is that although it is a mountain village, the buildings are densely packed together, forming a town-like landscape. This area is surrounded by mountains and is not suitable for rice cultivation. For this reason, advanced sericulture has been carried out since the mid-Edo period, and the income from sericulture was used to obtain daily necessities and seafood. This lifestyle and culture is also reflected in the townscape and buildings, allowing you to imagine the life of the villagers in the past.
